Questions, answered.
Everything people ask about Sellbird: how your AI agent connects and what it can do, how buyers are found and emails approved, how replies and deliverability are handled, what it costs, and how it keeps your data and your recipients safe.
The basics
What does Sellbird do, and what does my agent do?
Sellbird finds the companies and people, checks the emails, runs the inboxes and sending, and collects replies. Your agent decides who fits, writes the emails and drafts the answers. You approve what goes out and anything that costs money.
Can I use just part of Sellbird?
Yes. Finding companies, finding people, verifying emails and running outreach each work on their own. Build a list and export it to CSV, check emails you already have, or let Sellbird run everything.
Can I use the AI agent I already have?
Sellbird works with any client that supports remote MCP with OAuth sign-in, such as Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Codex and Cursor. Copy the MCP address from the Agents page in your account and add it to your client. Support depends on the client’s version, plan and admin settings.
Does my agent need to stay connected?
No. Sellbird sends approved emails on schedule and collects replies while your agent is offline. Your agent picks the replies up in its next session.
Which channels does it support?
Email, through Google Workspace and Microsoft 365. Domains, inboxes, warmup, campaigns and replies all run in one place.
What can I review or stop?
Every campaign email waits for your approval by default. A workspace owner can turn on autopilot in settings, and then campaign emails send without one-by-one approval, still inside your sending limits and opt-out rules. Reply drafts always need your approval. Your agent can never turn on autopilot, approve a draft or approve a purchase. You can pause all sending in a workspace with one click.
Agents and MCP
What is MCP?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the open standard AI agents use to work with outside tools. Sellbird runs an MCP server, so once your agent signs in it can use Sellbird’s tools in the workspace you allow, the same way it uses files or a browser.
Which AI agents work with Sellbird?
Sellbird works with any client that supports remote MCP with OAuth sign-in, such as Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Codex and Cursor. Copy the MCP address from the Agents page in your account and add it to your client. Support depends on the client’s version, plan and admin settings.
Does my agent have to stay connected for emails to send?
No. Your agent prepares the work during a session: contacts, campaigns and drafts. Sellbird sends what you approved on schedule and collects replies around the clock. They are waiting the next time your agent connects.
Can my agent send email without me?
Not unless you allow it.
How do I disconnect an agent?
Revoke it on the Agents page, or pause agent access for the whole workspace. Emails already scheduled are separate, so pause sending too if you want those to stop.
Finding buyers
How does Sellbird find companies and people?
You describe your customer: the trade, the size, the area and the signals that matter. Sellbird searches business listings, company websites and job posts for companies that match, then finds the owners and managers named on each company’s own pages. Your agent decides which ones are a good fit.
What is a buying signal?
A fact that makes your offer timely, like no online booking, a hiring post for a role your product replaces, ads running or a low Maps ranking. Each signal is saved with where and when it was seen, so every email can say why you are writing.
How are email addresses verified?
Sellbird learns the company’s email pattern from addresses it publishes, then checks the mailbox with a verification service without sending anything. Every address is marked verified, catch-all or guess. Guesses never send, and catch-all addresses send only if you allow it.
Can I use Sellbird just to verify emails?
Yes. Email verification works on its own. Check addresses you already have before you send from any tool, without running outreach in Sellbird.
Can I export my lists?
Yes. Select the companies or people you want and export them to CSV for your CRM or another sending tool.
Can I bring my own list?
Yes. Your agent can import contacts as rows or a CSV. Imported addresses are checked like any other before they can send.
Does Sellbird scrape LinkedIn?
No. Hosted Sellbird does not collect data from LinkedIn, Crunchbase or similar directories.
Writing and approving
Do I have to approve every email?
Every campaign email waits for your approval by default. A workspace owner can turn on autopilot in settings, and then campaign emails send without one-by-one approval, still inside your sending limits and opt-out rules. Reply drafts always need your approval. Your agent can never turn on autopilot, approve a draft or approve a purchase.
What is checked before an email sends?
Five things: links point only to your own domains, the opt-out footer and your postal address are added, a one-click unsubscribe header is attached, the send fits today’s cap, and it lands inside your sending hours in the recipient’s time zone. An email that fails a check waits for you.
Who writes the emails?
Your agent, from what it found about each business. Sellbird gives it the signals, the sequence and the rules. Every personal line links back to the signal it came from, so you can see why it was written.
How many follow-ups are sent?
As many steps as the campaign has, usually three, and each one only if nobody has replied. A reply from anyone at a company stops the sequence for everyone there.
Does it follow Gmail and Yahoo’s bulk sender rules?
Yes. Sellbird adds the one-click unsubscribe header (RFC 8058), honours opt-outs at once, keeps every inbox inside its daily cap and pauses a mailbox when bounces climb. Your workspace also needs a real postal address and an honest sender name before cold email can send.
Replies
How does Sellbird tell a real reply from an auto-reply?
By rule, not by AI. Out-of-office and other automatic replies are recognised from the headers mail servers add and from known subjects, so they don’t stop a sequence. A message a person wrote is marked as needing a reply.
What happens when someone unsubscribes?
They are never emailed again. Whether they use the link, the one-click header or just say so in a reply, the address is suppressed across the workspace at once.
Who answers the replies?
Your agent drafts each answer with the whole thread and the contact’s research in view, and the draft waits for your approval. Anything your agent shouldn’t answer alone, like a contract question, is flagged for you.
How will I know someone replied?
Sellbird emails your workspace when a person replies, at most once every ten minutes. It can also post each reply to a signed webhook so your own automation can wake your agent.
Do I need to keep my agent running to catch replies?
No. Sellbird reads every connected inbox around the clock. Replies wait in Conversations until you or your agent pick them up.
Sending and deliverability
How many cold emails can one inbox send a day?
Fewer than most people expect. Sellbird keeps every inbox well under the volume providers flag, ramps new inboxes up during warmup and spreads your daily volume across several inboxes and domains.
How long does warmup take?
Usually two to four weeks for a new inbox, depending on the provider and its history. Warmup is included for inboxes Sellbird runs. No warmup can guarantee inbox placement.
Do I need a separate domain for cold email?
We recommend one. A secondary sending domain keeps your main domain’s reputation out of it. Sellbird can buy one for you at cost, and only with your approval.
Which email providers are supported?
Google Workspace and Microsoft 365. Connect your organisation once with a short admin step, then add new inboxes or bring the ones you have.
What happens if my DNS is wrong?
Sellbird checks SPF, DKIM, DMARC and MX for every sending domain and shows what to fix. On supported DNS providers it can fix the records for you once you approve the change.
Agencies
Can I run outreach for several clients from one account?
Yes. An agency account holds a workspace per client, each with its own domains, inboxes, contacts, campaigns, suppression list and conversations. Nothing crosses between them.
Do clients see Sellbird?
Clients get a simpler dashboard with your name, logo and domain, showing only their own outreach.
How is an agency account priced?
We share agency pricing with early-access agencies before anything is charged. It covers all your client workspaces under one account, not a price per client.
Can one agent work for every client?
Yes. Your agent can work in any workspace you have access to, one at a time. Every request names its workspace and is checked against your access.
Can one client hurt another’s deliverability?
No. Every workspace sends from its own domains and inboxes, with its own daily caps and its own bounce kill switch. A problem in one workspace pauses that workspace only.
Founders
Can a founder run outbound without a sales team?
Yes. Your agent does the research and writing a first sales hire would do, Sellbird runs the sending, and you spend a few minutes a day approving drafts and answering the replies worth your time.
How much does it cost?
Hosted Sellbird is in early access, and we share pricing before anything is charged. Your email accounts and AI plan are billed separately by their providers.
Will it send from my main email address?
Only if you connect it. We recommend a secondary domain so your main domain’s reputation stays out of cold email. Domains and Google or Microsoft seats are billed separately.
How long until the first email goes out?
As soon as a mailbox is connected, your sending settings are done and you approve the first drafts. A brand-new domain or inbox needs a few weeks of warmup before real volume.
Early access
What is early access?
Hosted Sellbird is opening to a small group of teams first. Request a spot with your work email and a line about what you sell. We read every request and email you an invite when your workspace is ready.
How much does it cost?
We share pricing with early-access teams before anything is charged. Nothing is billed without your approval.
Do I pay for the AI?
No. Sellbird has no AI of its own and doesn’t charge for it. Your agent runs on the AI plan or API you already pay for.
What counts as an inbox?
An inbox counts once it is warming up or sending. Paused inboxes don’t count.
Do I pay for domains and Google or Microsoft seats?
Yes, separately. Domains are bought at cost with your approval. Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 mailboxes are billed by Google or Microsoft to your own organisation.
Can I self-host instead?
Yes. The open-source version is free to run on your own computer with your own accounts, warmup provider and AI plan.
Security
Is it safe to give an AI agent access to my email?
Your agent never gets your mailbox password. It can read the workspace contacts and conversations you allow through MCP, so your AI provider may process that content.
How are workspaces kept apart?
At the database level. Row-level security means a request for one workspace can’t read another’s data, even if the application asked for it.
What happens if an agent misbehaves?
Revoke its connection on the Agents page and it stops at once, or use the switch that stops every agent in a workspace. Each connection also has its own rate limits.
How do you protect the people who get my emails?
Every cold email has a one-click unsubscribe and an opt-out footer, opt-outs are suppressed across the workspace at once, and sending pauses itself when bounces climb.
Open source
What happened to Harvey?
Harvey is now Sellbird. The name Harvey belongs to another AI company, so the open-source project took a name of its own in version 0.4.0. It is the same project with the same history, and old GitHub links redirect. An existing install upgrades with git pull and pip install -e ., and its settings and data carry over.
Is Sellbird open source?
Yes. The self-hosted version is open source and free to run with your own accounts. Hosted Sellbird runs the same outreach workflow for you, with sending, warmup and replies handled, and is in early access.
What do I need to self-host?
A Mac or Linux computer with Python, a Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 mailbox (or any SMTP inbox), a free key from an email verification service, and a Claude or Codex plan if you want it to write on its own.
Does self-hosted Sellbird find prospects?
Yes. It finds businesses from free and paid sources, collects the buying signals you confirm, learns each company’s email pattern and verifies the address. Every paid lookup shows its cost before it runs.
Can I move from self-hosted to hosted later?
Yes, with some setup. The workflow is the same, but contacts and accounts have to be moved over, and hosted connects your agent with remote MCP instead of a local one. It isn’t a one-click migration yet.
Still have a question?
Request early access and see it for yourself, or read the open-source code.
